Air Conditioner Maintenance for Carefree Cooling
On a hot summer day, you want to be able to turn on your air conditioner and quickly cool your house down. The last thing you want to deal with is an air conditioner that suddenly stops working, leaving you hot, miserable, and sweating up a storm. Performing basic air conditioner maintenance throughout the year can ensure you will be able to quickly and effectively cool your home down on hot summer days.
If you wish to have carefree cooling days ahead of you, the following is a look at some of the basic air conditioner maintenance you should be performing on a regular basis.
Get Those Filters Cleaned or Replaced
Every air conditioner has a set of filters. The filters are designed to provide you with protection against bacteria, dust, and debris that may enter your home. If the filters are working properly – and they should be –, they will eventually become extremely dirty. Dirty filters will need to be cleaned and/or replaced.
Air filters on your air conditioner unit should be replaced or cleaned every two to three months during the hottest season. During the colder season, you may only need to replace the filters every three to six months.
Remove Dirt and Dust from Condenser Coils
Condenser coils are found under the outer casing of your air conditioner unit. The close proximity of the condenser coils to the great outdoors means it is constantly being exposed to dirt, dust, and debris that can eventually form a plug. If a plug gets too large, it could stop your air conditioner from working.
With just a little soap, water, and elbow grease, you can easily clean the condenser coils. Just use a stiff brush or some type of duster to remove any dirt or dust that has accumulated, clean it with soap or other cleaning agent, and rinse it with water.
Get the Indoor Unit Fan Coil Clean
Your indoor unit's fan coil can accumulate dirt and dust just like the outdoor condenser coils. Use the same method to clean the fan coils that you did with the condenser coils.
Perform Quick Basic Maintenance on a Regular Basis
There are several things you can do on a regular basis to perform quick, basic maintenance. Those things include:
- Use a stiff wire to clean the drop channels on your air conditioner
- Wipe down the exterior casing of the air conditioner to remove any dirt or dust
- Use an anti-bacterial solution to prevent mould from growing inside your air conditioning unit
